Syrian parliament extends to today discussions on Bashar's nomination
Syria, Politics, 6/27/2000
The Syrian People's Assembly (PA) on Monday extended its discussions on nominating Bashar al-Assad for the Syrian presidency for another day. The decision was taken after some 200 PA members out of the total number of 250 asked to make talks to this effect.
The speaker of the Syrian PA Abdul Qader Qaddoura said the session will be resumed today at 9 a.m. to continue hearing speeches of PA members about al-Assad's nomination. Qaddoura said that number of speakers reached 61. He said there will be no night session which means the unanimous approval of the nomination will be eventually made today.
Meantime, well-informed sources in Damascus said it is expected the PA members will unanimously approve the nomination. A matter which avails for the PA to set a date for the referendum. Syrian officials said the referendum might be held in the first ten days from July and the President to take his constitutional oath on July 15th.
During the session of the PA scores of Syrian youths demonstrated in front of the parliament carrying banners of backing to Bashar al-Assad and chanted slogan slogans of supoport to Bashar al-Assad.
