Jordanian source and the partite project
Fertile Crescent, Politics, 6/27/2000

The Jordanian weekly al-Majd quoted a well- informed Jordanian source as saying that the new Jordanian government, as it seeks to find out a series and strategic means to revive the Jordanian economy, will bring back to light the tripartite economic integration project between Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

The project which was called for just one and a half year ago by the Jordanian King Abdullah II and was then met with great enthusiasm by the chairman of the Jordanian royal court Abdul karim al-Kabareiti, but the government of Abdul karim al-Rawabedah opposed it then together with many Arab and foreign sides.

The source explained that the firm relations between King Abdullah and each of lt. Gen. Bashar al-Assad and President Emil Lahoud will facilitate things for the government of Ali Abu al-Ragheb to settle the crisis of confidence provoked by the government of al-Rawabdah just 10 months ago and resulted in halting practical steps towards achieving this project.

The Jordanian source also stressed that the march of cooperation and economic openness between Syria and Iraq achieved long strides and have been steadily accelerated, noting that Jordan should not be absent from this process.
