On the resignation of the Kuwaiti minister of oil
Kuwait, Politics, 6/27/2000

Kuwait minister of oil Sheikh Saud Nasser al-Sabah on Monday announced that he had submitted his resignation to the ruler of Kuwait Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah and to the crown prince and premier Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah.

In a speech he made at the Kuwaiti nation's council ( parliament) on Monday, Sheikh Saud added that the resignation was put under the disposal of the Emir and the crown prince to be decided upon.

He said that leading figures at the oil sector put their resignation at the disposal of the ministry of oil until investigations are completed.

However, the resignation of the Kuwaiti oil minister comes after the great explosion took place on Sunday in al-Ahmadi refinery which resulted in total destruction of the refinery and killing of four persons and wounding of 49. Just one week earlier al-Shueibah oil refinery was exposed to a similar explosion. The results were small material losses but two were killed and other four wounded.

On the other hand, Kuwait's deputy premier and foreign minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad called on the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah not to accept the resignation of the Kuwaiti minister of oil Sheikh Saud Nasser al-Sabah.

In an intervention on Monday before the Kuwaiti nation council ( Parliament) Sheikh Sabah stressed that the government is very serious to try those behind the catastrophe of al-Ahmadi refinery explosion.
