Mubarak, Arafat discuss obstacles before negotiations with Israel

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak Sunday morning conferred with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, who had arrived in Cairo Saturday night from Tunisia.

Attending the two leaders' talks from the Egyptian side were Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, Information Minister Safwat Al-Sherif and Presidential Political Advisor Osama Al-Baz.

The meeting was also attended by senior Palestinian officials including PLO Executive Committee Secretary Mahmoud Abbas, Arafat's Advisor Nabil Abu Redina and Palestinian Ambassador in Cairo Zhodi Al-Qudra.

Sherif said that Mubarak-Arafat meeting fell within consultations over outcome of contact between parties to the peace process as well as exchange of viewpoints over obstacles and controversial issues.

Arafat Sunday, after returning to Gaza said the declaration of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital would be made on September 13.

September 13 was set as a deadline for reaching a Palestinian-Israeli final peace accord.

Arafat was speaking in the inauguration of Fatah Group's first foundation conference in Nablus. The Palestinian Satellite Channel aired the event.

"We have a few weeks left ahead of us, but they are the most important and critical, because at the end of them we will declare statehood," he told some 50,000 people attending the event.

Arafat underlined the importance of supporting national cohesion to counter challenges.
