Parliament agrees on nominating Bashar as Syria's president
Syria, Politics, 6/26/2000

The Syrian People's Assembly agreed in its second session today unanimously on nominating Bashar al-Assad for president as the 250 members of, most of whom are from Baath party.

Hundreds of persons gathered in front of the Syrian People's Assembly and raised Bashar al-Assad's pictures and chanted slogans of support.

Informed sources said that Syria witnessed during the last days a wide detention campaign especially in lines of the army that comprised tens of the officers. Some of these officers are believed to still have connection with Rafaat al-Assad, the outlawed brother of the late Syrian president, while the other officers are still in connection with former Syrian intelligence official Yaeli Dobah who was not selected for nomination because he did not belong to any party.
