North Africa, Economics, 6/24/2000
Morocco ranks 5th in terms of economic competitiveness in Africa after Namibia, Botswana, Mauritius and Tunisia, says a report of the Davos world economic forum..
The report, entitled "competitiveness in Africa" was presented at the 10th Southern Africa summit which brought together economic and political elite of the African continent this June 21-23 in Durban (South Africa).
While Morocco ranks 5th out of a total of 24 countries, Tunisia was identified as the country with the soundest growth prospects in the medium term. Egypt and South Africa come in the 6th and 7th position.
The report, whose first edition was published in 1998, identifies Zimbabwe and Kenya as "acknowledged losers" during the last two years.
The competitiveness index, calculated on the basis of several data, is supposed to predict medium and long term potentials the African economies may offer for managers of enterprises.
