Hawatemah and changes in Syria
Syria, Politics, 6/24/2000

The Chairman of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine Nayef Hawatemah has stressed that the same Syrian foreign policy will continue after the late President Hafez al-Assad as it was under his rule.

In a statement to the Kul al-Arab newspaper, issued in the occupied Palestinian territories on Friday, Hawatemah added " I think the Syrian foreign policy including that towards the cause of Palestine will remain the same." He said that he had addressed a call to the new Syrian leadership especially to Bashar al-Assad to open the doors of Damascus for a pan Palestinian national dialogue that brings together all groups of the Palestinian Liberation Organization PLO, the Islamic trend and the national figures.

Hawatemah said that as for the Syrian regional policy, it will continue in the same approach towards comprehensive peace based on implementing international legitimacy resolutions, the land for peace formula, June 4, 1967 border lines, against security arrangements, settling the water issue, normalization and diplomatic relations.

Hawatemah added " as for the internal matters, I think that there is a degree of internal political, social and economic openness that will take place because taking Syria out of the state of economic stalemate to the age of modernity, the information technology and the Internet will necessarily needs an internal political openness and an openness in economic legislation and laws, so as investments will come to Syria either though immigrants sums or Arab and foreign investments."
