Ethiopian- Eritrean peace negotiations to be resumed

Ethiopia's Foreign Minister Sayoum Mesfin said that indirect peace negotiations between his country and Eritrea which were held in Algiers will be resumed by the beginning of July at the level of experts.

Upon his arrival from Algiers in Addis Ababa, Mesfin said that indirect negotiations will be resumed by the beginning of July at the level of experts, but under the condition that fighting to stop immediately. He started that negotiations started on the main issues including joint border demarcation and financial compensations for the costs of the war and defining the side which started the fighting on May 1998, following a border dispute between the two countries.

Ethiopia's foreign minister paid a work visit to Algiers on Sunday, June 18 after signing the agreement that provides for a halt to fighting between the two warring countries with the objective of carrying out talks on the mechanism of implementing this agreement at the supervision of the Organization of African Unity. On Thursday evening Mesfin returned back to Addis Ababa accompanied by members of the Ethiopian delegation.
