Need to preserve Jerusalem's Arab identity , ministers say
Regional, Politics, 6/23/2000
Arab information ministers, meeting in Cairo on Thursday, insisted on the need to stage media campaigns to support the struggle of Palestinians to preserve the city of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) against Israeli attempts to obliterate its Arab-Islamic identity.
The 33rd session of the Arab League information ministerial council considered as illegal the US project to transfer the US embassy from Tel-Aviv to Al Quds. They also called for a meeting of the information commission in charge of developing an Arab work plan to follow up latest Israeli attempts to capture the city.
The council recommended the staging of a media campaign on dangers of a project to hold the international Library Union conference in the city next August.
Recommendations dealt with the need for an Arab information policy to reach a fair solution to the issue of Palestinian refugees and incite Israel to comply with international laws.
The ministers also urged for support to the Palestinian Book Year launched last March and to the Syrian people's struggle to recover the Golan heights occupied by Israel and decided to allocate $ one million to the Lebanese information ministry to support media activities to free its occupied lands.
Arab media will devote May 25 of each year, coinciding with the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territories, to information programs on Lebanon.
