Lecture on Moroccan- Korean Relations in Fez
Morocco-South Korea, Politics, 6/23/2000
Korean ambassador to Morocco, Chul-Ki JU, gave a lecture here on Thursday on Moroccan-Korean relations in the 21st century, highlighting the diverse aspects of bilateral cooperation.
In his lecture, part of the Korean cultural day sponsored by the association of Korean students in Morocco, the ambassador recalled that since Morocco and South Korea established diplomatic relations in 1962, bilateral relations of friendship and cooperation have been steadily consolidated.
The diplomat surveyed his country's efforts to fulfil economic and social development goals saying South Korea managed to promote an advanced market economy covering all sectors of economic activity (car industry, shipbuilding, electronics, household appliances `)
With a gross domestic product of nearly $400 billion, Korea ranks in the 11th world rank, he said.
Touching on relations between South and North Korea, he said the strives and cold war between the two Koreas had serious consequences on the population of north Korea, which is plunged in poverty and famine. Efforts are now being made to pave the way to reunification, he said pointing out that a reconciled and united Korea might be an element of world stability and peace.
The Korean diplomat also spoke of the reforms initiated by Morocco to consolidate democracy and the rule of the law, saying economy restructuring and privatization are likely to attract foreign investors and make of Morocco a center of business, communication and transport in Africa and in the Mediterranean.
He added that although huge economic, trade and investments partnership and cooperation potentials exist the volume of trade exchanges ($130 million) between the two countries is still weak.
The Korean cultural day was marked by the presentation by two Korean students attending the Faculty of arts and humanities in Fez of their research papers in Arabic.
