US embassy in Amman receives threats
Jordan-USA, Local, 6/23/2000
The Jordanian government has dismissed what was announced on Thursday by the US embassy in Amman in that it had received terrorist threats targeting the US embassy and citizens in Jordan. The Jordanian government stressed it is ready to deal with such events.
The US State Department spokesman said yesterday "The US Government has information concerning terrorist targeting of the United States Embassy in Amman, Jordan. While the United States has full confidence in the Government of Jordan's demonstrated ability and willingness to address security threats, the full dimensions of this threat are not known at this time. And while current information indicates that the US Embassy is targeted, we cannot rule out the possibility that terrorists may also plan to target other venues in Jordan. So in keeping with our public announcement, we are urging American citizens traveling or residing in Jordan to exercise prudence and review their security practices and to remain alert to changing situations."
Replying to the statement, the Jordanian minister of information Taleb al-refa said " there is no need for such warning " and that " the Jordanian security forces are always on alert and have enough information to deal with such cases."
