Omran: Bashar al-Assad's leadership is a reflection of people's commitment
Syria, Politics, 6/23/2000

Syria's Minister of Information Muhammad Omran has stressed that Bashar al-Assad's leadership of the Baath party and state came as a deep and sincere expression of the masses love and commitment, and that this process was manifested through constitutional establishments and according to the provisions of the Syrian constitutions.

In statements he made on Thursday in Cairo on the sidelines of meetings of the Arab ministers of information at the premises of the Arab League, the Syrian minister of information said that strengthening the strategies set by the late President Hafez al-Assad and making changes to withstand the future is the policy the new leadership will embark on.

He added that continuity means clinging to principles, which in turn, politically speaking means commitment to all rights and to every inch of the Syrian territories and making all efforts and potentials to restore back all rights.

He added that at the economic and social level, this means continued work to achieve social and economic development, according to principles based on rebuilding the state's foundation and adjusting laws and regulations which are no longer able to cope with developments, fighting corruption in state- owned establishments and embarking on the principle of transparency through appointing a person to a certain position based on merit.

Omran stressed the care of Lt. Gen. Bashar al-Assad to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on implementing UN security council resolutions 242 and 338 and the land for peace formula. He added this means Israel's complete withdrawal from the Golan until June 4, 1967 border lines " this position is un-bargained," Omran said.

The information minister made it clear that Syria continues its attempts to strengthen Arab solidarity so as to counter the major challenges hatched against the Arab nation in the area of protecting national Arab security for a better Arab future. He noted Syria's care to have its security maintained in the context of the Arab nation.
