Bashar al-Assad confers with UN chief

Lt. Gen. Bashar al-Assad on Thursday at the Presidential Palace received the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Annan was accompanied by the UN special coordinator Terry Larsen and the UN assistant secretary for political affairs Wakeran Bernargast.

On his own behalf and that of the UN, the UN chief offered condolences to Bashar al-Assad on the demise of the later president Hafez al-Assad.

Annan also expressed appreciation for the role played by the late president towards the UN and his collaboration with it in various conditions in the interest of world peace and people's freedom and progress.

Talks during the meeting dealt with means of achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region and implementation of UN resolutions.

Lt. Gen. Bashar stressed to the UN chief Syria's continued backing to the UN to achieve a just and comprehensive peace. he also stressed Syria's backing to Lebanon in its just demands on attaining full Israeli withdrawal from the Lebanese territories.

Annan and his companions arrived in Damascus on Thursday noon in a visit to Syria. they were welcomed by Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara, senior foreign ministry officials, Syria's permanent representative at the UN Mikhael Wahbah, UN permanent representative in Damascus Tawfiq Bin Amara, the commander of the UN in the Golan ( UNDOF) and representatives of the UN organizations in Damascus.

In an arrival statement to SANA, Annan said " I will discuss with the Syrian officials developments in South Lebanon and the ME peace process. By peace I mean just and comprehensive peace in the region."

He added: " In Lebanon we have worked with sides concerned to implement UN resolutions 425."

He continued " for our part, we had urged sides concerned in the peace process to implement UN resolutions 242 and 338 released by the UN security council."
