US military and financial aids to Israel
Israel, Politics, 6/22/2000
The branch financial committee for foreign assets at the US congress on Tuesday evening approved the US financial and military aids to Israel for the next fiscal year as well as the annual aids submitted to Israeli estimated at US$ 2.8 billion.
Israel's prime minister Ehud Barak welcomed the committee's ratification on providing US military and financial aids to Israel.
Barak explained that the US is a main alley to Israel and shows real commitment to what he called the security of Israel.
On Monday several senate members called for reducing by $ 250 million the US financial aids to Israel due to Israel's intent to sell China advanced weapons that may be used against Taiwan or the US, following threats made by Israel's deputy defense minister Afream Seneh to punish the US and fight the US exports. The Israeli radio reported.
Meantime, the chairman of the foreign relations and security committee at the Israeli Knesset Dan Mredour has described US- Israeli relations as a strong and unique " undeclared" alliance of its sort in the world.
In an interview with the Israeli Hebrew language radio on Wednesday, Mredour said that Israel's attempt to sell spying planes to China and the rejection of the US administration of the deal led to confusing US- Israeli relations in the field of continued US aids to Israel despite the fact that the US administration has not taken yet a decision to reduce the volume of its aids to Israel.
He disclosed that the US administration had known earlier of the proposed planes deal, but it has escalated its rejection to this deal at the US Senate and congress, who refused this deal and many of them called for reducing the volume of aids to Israel at US $ 250 million.
He added that Israel will continue its efforts to settle this issue.
He stressed that Israel will not cancel this deal with China and hoped the American rejection will be restricted to this effect.
