African countries urges the UN to lift sanctions from Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 6/22/2000

The Organization of African Unity OAU has urged the UN Security Council to immediately lift the sanctions imposed on Sudan since 1996.

In a message he sent to the French ambassador to the UN, who is the chairman of the UN Security Council for the current month, the Secretary General of the OAU Salem Ahmad Salem said that the " lifting of sanctions have become an urgent matter."

Salem added that lifting of sanctions from Sudan will positively contribute to the efforts aiming at strengthening peace, security and stability in the region.

Salem said that Ethiopia and Egypt have strongly backed the call made to lift the sanctions from Sudan.

Worthy mentioning that the sanctions imposed on Sudan call on all world countries to reduce number of Sudanese diplomats in their territories and restrict the entry or the transit travel for Sudanese government officials.
