Egypt praises UN role in supporting Palestinians rights
Egypt, Politics, 6/21/2000
Appreciation of the UN key role in support of the Palestinian cause, Egypt has called on the international organization to sustain its backing of the drive to establish just and-overall peace in the region.
This came in Foreign Minister Amr Moussa's word to a symposium held in Cairo Tuesday on prospects for Palestinian economic development and the regional peace process, which was read out on his behalf by his assistant for Arab affairs, Ambassador Moustafa El-Feqi.
Moussa voiced Egypt's conviction that reaching a final settlement, ensuring just and comprehensive peace and security to all parties concerned, was a precondition of establishing fruitful regional cooperation.
"We look forward to Israel's respect for concluded agreements with the Palestinian side, without further procrastination or slowdown," Moussa said.
Moussa said the nearing of the date for declaring Palestinian statehood makes this symposium all the more important.
"The new Palestinian state will be in dire need of international support to help it build up its institutions and infrastructure," he said.
Moussa said that international assistance to the Palestinian Authority so far only contributed to meeting the minimum of basic Palestinian needs.
But the coming stage entails the laying down of a visualization of how to activate an international effort to support the Palestinian state and place it on the path towards sustainable development, he added.
