9th Baath party congress conclude, Bashar al-Assad elected regional leadership secretary

The 9th regional congress of the Baath Arab Socialist Party on Tuesday evening concluded its 9th session convened on June 17 -20. Bashar al-Assad was elected among other 20 as member of the Baath Party regional leadership and that this leadership will meet within two days to elect him as its secretary general. The congress also elected 21 members of the Baath party regional leadership and 90 members for the Baath party central command.

Some 12 members to the Party's regional leadership (RL) are new and the other 9 are kept.

Members of the RL are: Abdullah al-Ahmar ( assistant secretary of the Bath Party), Abdul Halim Khaddam ( Vice President); Suleiman Qaddah ( the Party's assistant regional secretary); Zuheir Masharqa ( Vice- President), Abdul Qader Qaddoura ( speaker of parliament); Fayez al-Nasser ( former RL member); Ahmad Durgham ( former RL member); Mustafa Tlass ( defense minister); Walid Hamdoun ( former RL member)Muhammad Mustafa Miro ( the prime minister), Naji al-Otari( Deputy premier for services); Farouk al-Shara ( the foreign minister); Salaam al-Yassin ( minister). Among the new RL members are Ibrahim Huneidi, Farouk Abu al-Shaamat, Ghyath Barakat, Walid al-Bouz, Majed Shadoud, Saeed Bukheitan and Muhammad al- Hussein.

The 9th party Regional congress also elected members of the Baath Party central committee which is consisted of 90 members.
