Annan confers with Nasrullah
Lebanon, Politics, 6/21/2000

The Secretary General of the UN Kofi Annan on Tuesday in Beirut met with the secretary general of the Hizbullah Party Hassan Nasrullah.

Present at the meeting was the spokesman for UNIFIL forces working in Lebanon Timor Goksil.

Talks dealt with the Israeli pullout from South Lebanon, border demarcation and the question of the Lebanese detainees in the Israeli jails.

Following the meeting, Annan described talks with Nasrullah as very fruitful. He indicated that these talks dealt with developments in South Lebanon and the role played by UNIFIL and social needs and requirements.

Annan added " we have discussed the Israeli violations which were reported by the Lebanese side," noting that the UN will deal with this situation seriously and will verify it.

He added that the UN will take these Israeli violations very seriously.

He added " I have asked UNIFIL to verify from this issue of the Israeli violations, and they are working on that and will assert the correction of these violation. I myself will be in Israel for two days and I will raise this issue with the Israeli side."

The UN chief explained that UNIFIL's cooperation with the state of Lebanon was discussed as well as with other commissions. " This cooperation was in the past and we want it to continue," Annan added.

He said: " We have discussed the question of the Lebanese detainees in the Israeli jails. A topic which we had raised with the Israeli side."

Meantime, the secretary general of the Hizbullah party Hassan Nasrullah stressed that verification of the Israeli withdrawal to the International borders is shouldered by the state of Lebanon, which seriously works to this effect, noting that the Hizbullah party will not give up an inch of the Lebanese territories.

During his meeting on Tuesday morning with the UN chief, Nasrullah called on the UN for an instant and decisive solutions to the Israeli " incursions" into the Lebanese territories. He explained saying " The blue line does not mean anything to us because what our people want is their natural right to their territories. As the Lebanese resistance and people have not waited during all the past years to settle their issue, and they fought bravely until they attained victory, they will not again wait political efforts to deal with these Israeli incursions."

Nasrullah stressed that the Lebanese resistance and people will work for the liberation of every inch of the occupied Lebanese territories.

Nasrullah stressed that the question of the Lebanese detainees in the Israeli jails is a main cause and the main priority for the Hizbullah party and the Lebanese resistance He stressed the need of releasing the detainees immediately and without linking their release to any other case. He called on the UN to carry out its political and humanitarian role to this effect.

The UN chief promised these issues to be followed up in the coming stage.

The UN chief explained the UN view point concerning international borders and over what is termed as the " blue Line," the Israeli violations of borders, the efforts made by the UN to this effect and latest developments in the region.
