Regional, Politics, 6/20/2000
Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak said the Group of 15 (G-15) leaders reached during the Cairo Summit a unified vision on the G-15 program of action in the years to come on all regional and international arenas.
In a speech marking the conclusion of the grouping's Summit Tuesday afternoon, President Mubarak said the Summit's meetings came to complement positive attempts of developing countries to present their viewpoints on international issues of common interest.
Mubarak described the Summit discussions as fruitful and comprehensive, noting that they dealt with the social and economic developments in the world since the establishment of the G-15.
Mubarak pointed out that the foreign debt problem and the initiatives taken for the good of poor nations were reviewed.
A number of important issues, particularly combating poverty, drug trafficking and terrorism were examined, said the President, adding that the necessity of holding a conference on such matters was underlined.
The Summit welcomed Indonesia's hosting the Group's 11th Summit, to be held in 2001, and Venezuela's hosting the G-15 12th Summit in 2002, the President added.
President Mubarak praised the friendly and cordial spirit that prevailed all sessions saying that the discussions were serious, objective, and successful.
They led to the goals aspired for by our peoples and to the protection of their legitimate interests as humanity is going through an important crossing point, President Mubarak added.
Mubarak mentioned that such prevailing spirit propelled the accurate assessment of the achievements made by the Group of Fifteen during the past decade and the visualization of the future's wide horizons with the advent of the new millennium.
The meeting was an opportunity for positive and effective contribution of the developing nations which expounded their vision as regards international issues before the convocation of the United Nations extraordinary General Assembly Session on the new millennium within the coming few months, President Mubarak said.
The Assembly Session will be a good chance to test the credibility of the world order in dealing with the south issues transparently and fairly, the President added.
President Mubarak said Trade and Economy Ministers of the Group of Fifteen will meet in August in Malaysia while the Group's Foreign Ministers will convene in October in Mexico.
At a press conference held Tuesday with the participation of Heads of state and government of the G-15 Member-States, the President explained that the two meetings come within the context of constant coordination, consultation and cooperation among the Group's members.
They aim at enhancing the Group's role in international forums and boosting development efforts in the Group of Fifteen Member States, President Mubarak concluded.
