Regional, Politics, 6/20/2000
The UN General Assembly on June 17 wrapped up the one-week-long debates on the topic of increasing the number of Security Council member states Yet, no agreement was reached. Another round of deliberations is expected to be held July next on the same topic.
"This topic faces a number of political snags and hurdles mainly including the existence of aspirations of some regional forces in Asia, Africa and Latin America," said Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN Ambassador Ahmad Abul-Gheit.
"Egypt called for not increasing the number of SC members at the expense of developing countries," he added.
