Arab League backs Moroccan candidate to OIC top position
Regional, Politics, 6/20/2000

The Arab League voiced support to Morocco's candidate, Abdelouahed Belqziz, to the post of secretary general of the organization of Islamic conference (OIC).

In a statement released following a consultation meeting of delegates held in Cairo Monday, the Arab League's council decided to adopt a unified stance in support of the Moroccan candidate, at the meeting of foreign ministers of Islamic countries to be held in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) this June 27-29.

The statement calls on Islamic countries to intervene with Asian and African OIC member-countries to get their support to the Moroccan candidate, in replacement of Azeddine Laraki, a former Moroccan prime minister.

Besides Morocco, Turkey and Bangladesh are also running to head the Jeddah-based Islamic Organization.
