King Mohammed arrives in USA

Morocco's King Mohammed VI arrived Monday evening in Washington for a state visit to the United States at the invitation of President Bill Clinton.

Upon arrival at Andrews Military Air Base, the king was greeted by Ms. Meryl French, Head of Protocol of the United States.

The king, who is accompanied by Princess Lalla Meriem, Moulay Abdallah Alaoui and Moulay Driss Alaoui, was also greeted by many members of the diplomatic corps accredited to the USA.

Under heavy rains, the king went to shake hands with hundreds of Moroccans, living in the USA, who came to greet the king in his first state visit to America since his coming to power in July 1999.

The King is also accompanied by a large delegation, including foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa, Royal advisors, Andre Azoulay, Mohamed Kabbaj and Ms. Zoulikha Nasri, economy and finance minister, Fathallah Oualalou, industry, trade and handicraft minister, Alami Tazi, delegate minister in charge of the national defense administration, Abderrahmane Sbai, Secretary of state for foreign affairs, Taieb Fassi Fihri and secretary of state in charge of disabled persons, Ms. Nouzha Chekrouni.

Several businessmen are in the Royal party.

King Mohammed VI is expected to meet this Tuesday President Bill Clinton at an official ceremony at the White House Rose Garden.

The sovereign will hold talks with the US chief executive, members of the US administration and top officials at the Congress.

During his stay, the king will also be awarded the Honoris-Causa doctorate by the George Washington University.

After Washington, the king will fly to New York for a work session with US businessmen.
