Iran for consolidating further relations with Qatar

Iranian President Muhammad Khatami on Monday expressed his desire to giving " further consolidation" to relations between Iran and Qatar "on all levels."

He called during his meeting with Qatar's minister of finance, the economy and trade Youssef Hussein Kamal, on all senior economists in the two countries to reactivating the joint economic committee.

Khatami who had visited Qatar in April 1999, had called for " the establishment greater cooperation between the two countries." He said these relations are to be built on "mutual respect, non- intervention in the internal affairs of each of us." He stressed that " the security of the countries of the region is a collective one," adding that Iran sees it has no problem in the region that cannot be dissolved through the good intention and negotiations."

The Qatari minister expressed his hope that the coming visit of the ruler of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani to Tehran will " open new prospects " in the bilateral relations. The visit, however, which will be the first for the Qatari Emir to Iran since the launching of the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979, has not fixed yet.

The Iranian official news agency reported that the Qatari minister, who took part in the meetings of the joint economic committee, also met with the Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi.

Iran and Qatar are linked to good relations. They share the Gulf oil field of "Pars." Tehran has repeatedly criticized Qatar for reproaching Israel.
