Regional, Politics, 6/19/2000
Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak on Monday underlined the need to activate dialogue between the G-15 and other different regional groupings especially the group of industrialized countries.
Addressing the inaugural session of the tenth G-15 Summit, President Mubarak called for setting up a new economic order that is more just and more democratic.
At the beginning of his speech, the Egyptian Leader welcomed the heads of state and government taking part in the Summit.
President Mubarak stressed the importance of trade and economic cooperation among the G-15 member states.
He voiced confidence in the possibility of activating the Group's resolutions and developing economies of members states while boosting links among them.
The Egyptian Leader noted that despite problems facing developing countries like drought, desertification and poverty, a glimpse of hope is emerging represented in technological progress which provided opportunities to surge ahead.
President Mubarak dealt with the negative impact of globalization and said developing countries looked forward and hoped to benefit from a world economic order which is being crystallized, but disruption started to increase as many countries suffered economic crises in 1997, and development rate dropped in south countries from six to two percent in 1998.
"Cultural and social cooperation efforts should be promoted and cooperation with international parties should be fostered out of the concept of common human destiny," he added.
President Mubarak, head of the current G-15 Summit, in his speech voiced hope that the Group's member states would be able to narrow the gap with the industrialized countries in the field of technology, information and in the industry, training and services sector.
"The current new economic changes make it incumbent on the G-15 to endeavor to coordinate dialogue between the north and south in order to establish a fair international economic system and reach a joint vision in this domain," he said.
President Mubarak stressed the importance for democracy to prevail international relations in general and that resolutions of international organizations should be adopted in cooperation with developing countries, taking into consideration their views and their interests.
President Mubarak said he is confident that all will join hands in working for realizing one objective namely achievement of development of peoples of member states.
He said that all realize that the road is difficult and not strewn with flowers but this does not shake the strength of the Group's position and its just cause in seeking the achievement of equity among peoples.
