Abu al-Ragheb to be Jordan's new prime minister
Jordan, Politics, 6/19/2000
The Jordanian King Abdullah II appointed Ali Abu al-Ragheb as a prime minister in Jordan to replace Abdul Raouf al-Rawabdah.
Currently Abu al-Ragheb ( 53) is the chairman of the economic and financial committee at the Jordanian parliament and he was a former minister.
Abu al-Rafheb's main mission is to give a push forward to economic reforms in the Kingdom.
Abu al-Rafheb has started consultation to form the new government in which are expected to continue the ministers of foreign affairs, finance and tourism from the government of al-Rawabdah, according to the Jordanian governmental sources.
Meanwhile, sources expect that Abu al-Ragheb's government would gain the parliament's trust and for the first time, Sheik Abd El-Rahim Lakour - a member of the Moslem Brothers group - will assume the power of ministry of endowments and the Islamic affairs. This comes despite of the Moslem Brothers' disapproval of his acceptance to the post as they boycotted the former parliamentary elections.
It was decided that Abu al-Ragheb will keep 5 ministers from the former government among whom are Foreign Minister Abd El-Elah El-Khateeb, Minister of Tourism Abdoh Beltagi, and Minister of Planning El-Refaei .
