Eritrea, Ethiopia signed a crease fire agreement

Eritrea and Ethiopia on Sunday in Algiers signed a cease fire agreement that will be applicable immediately and thereby ending a two-year war between the two countries.

The Ethiopian foreign minister Seyoum Misfin and the Eritrean foreign minister signed the agreement after hard negotiations, in the presence of the Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika, who is also the current chairman of the Organization of African Unity .

In brief speeches, followed the signing ceremony, the two ministers vowed to honor the content of the agreement. They praised the efforts made by President Butaflika in order to achieve rapprochement in the view points of the two countries.

However, the statement states to deploy UN forces between the two warring armies. A provisional security zone will be established within a belt of 25 Km inside the Eritrean territories. Besides a UN mission will be positioned between the two sides with the task of keeping forces. This mission will be formed later.

Moreover, the text of the peace plan, which was circulated simultaneously in Addis Ababa and Asmara, states immediate cease fire on the land and in the air following the signing of the agreement.

The peace keeping forces will be in charge of observing the cease- fire, the redeployment of the Ethiopian forces as well as to verify honoring of security obligations, the two sides committed to and monitoring of the provisional security zone in Eritrea, the agreement has already stated to set up.
