Syria, Politics, 6/17/2000
The 9th regional congress of the Baath Arab Socialist party was opened today at 10 a.m. ( Damascus times) at the Ummayad's conference hall in the outskirts of Damascus.
It was attended by the commander general of the Syrian army and armed forces Lt. Gen. Bashar al-Assad, members of the Baath party national and regional leaderships, members of the central command of the national progressive front, the prime minister, the Cabinet ministers and members of the Baath Party inspection and audition committee.
At the main desk of the conference, there were sitting the Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Mustafa Miro, the Secretary of the Syrian Communist Party Youssef al-Faisal, Safwan Qudsi of the Socialist federation party, the speaker of the Syrian parliament Abdul Qader Qaddoura, Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam, the Baath Party's assistant regional secretary Suleiman Qaddah, the Assistant Secretary General of the Baath party Abdullah al-Ahmar, the secretary general of the Socialist unionist party Fayez Ismael the secretary general of the Communist party Wesal Farha ( The Syrian communists have split to two parties chaired by Wesal Farha and al-Faisal ) and Ghassan Othman.
On the wall a banner was written as one of the late president's saying " All Baath Party congresses are important. They seek to find out the mistakes of the past, work to eliminate them, aspire prospects of the future, and draw work plans for rightful policies towards this very future."
After the conferees observed a one minute silence in memory of the late President, speeches of the Baath Party, by Qaddah was read as well as by the secretaries of the seven parties of the national progressive front. Two speeches for two members of the NPF of the secretary general of the Arab socialist movement Abdul Ghani Qanout and the secretary of the socialist unionist part Ahmad al-Assad were read on their behalf by Abdullah al-Ahmar who was elected as the chairman of the congress in a special session for the NPF held on June 7, 2000. al-Ahmad said the two men are ill. His speeches commemorated the great achievements realized by the late president on the local, Arab and international Levels and national stances in clinging to the national cause of restoring back the whole of the Golan and cohesion and solidarity with Lebanon that resulted in liberating South Lebanon from South Lebanon.
The speakers expressed hope that Bashar al-Assad will be the best successor for ruling Syria and voiced out-all backing to him to this end.
It seems from the atmosphere of the conference that its 1021 members and 138 observers who are distributed on three committees will discuss with a high sense of responsibility submitted political, organizational and economic reports. It also seemed that all discussions will be made in implementation of the late president's set policy pursued for 30 years of the late president's rule.
