331,000 Palestinians in Jerusalem according to census
Palestine, Politics, 6/16/2000
Results of the first Palestinian census that took place in the Arab Eastern Jerusalem showed that number of residing Palestinians in the city reached 331,553 citizens in 1998, a number that greatly exceeds Israeli estimates.
The census expected that the number would reach 494,445 citizens in the year 2010.
Israel estimates the number of Palestinians in Jerusalem at nearly 180,000 citizens.
Hasan Abu Lebdah, head of the Palestinian central statistic department, said that "the statistics of the department about Jerusalem are not 100% accurate and may be a minimum number," adding that this is because the Israelis obstructed efforts for collecting data after considering Palestinians attempts in 1967 to collect such data as being illegal.
