Regional, Economics, 6/14/2000
There are disputes inside O.A.P.E.C that precede its coming meeting on whether increasing oil production is a proper step to confront the rising oil prices.
Saudi Arabia, the largest petroleum producing country, referred to the possibility that prices would continue to increase.
Iran's petroleum minister said it is early for talks about increasing production because there is no shortage in of the raw petroleum. He said that the price increases came due to the mismanagement of the U.S government to the energy crisis.
Algerian Energy and Mining Minister Chakib Khelil told APS Tuesday that Algeria favors of a price around $25 per barrel. A few days ahead of the next OPEC meeting, scheduled in Vienna next June 21st, He said that Algeria would maintain its January's position for $25 per oil barrel, pointing out that "too high prices" are not in the interest of producing countries.
The organization agreed at its previous meeting on mechanisms for amending production if prices went beyond a certain price range and increased to a point that makes it necessary to carry out the agreement.
