Mauritania-Morocco, Politics, 6/13/2000
The Moroccan - Mauritanian high joint commission opened in Nouakchott Monday its first session under the co-chairmanship of the two states' prime ministers, Abderrahmane Youssoufi and Cheikh Al Afia Ould Mohamed Khouna.
The two officials underlined the need to update and review the legal framework regulating Moroccan- Mauritanian bilateral relations, taking into consideration the new changes in international relations, and to intensify efforts to increase trade between the two north African countries.
They also stressed the need for new mechanisms to activate cooperation and the movement of persons and goods between the two countries. To this end, they called for the setting up of a free- trade area between Morocco and Mauritania.
The two prime ministers voiced commitment to build the Arab Maghreb Union, which, they said is a strategic and an irreversible choice to achieve economic complementarity and integration between the member countries.
Mauritania and Morocco are both members of the Arab Maghreb Union, which also musters Algeria, Libya and Tunisia.
The session will be crowned with the signing of seven cooperation accords that were finalized over the week-end by experts of the two states.
