Morocco-Sweden, Politics, 6/13/2000

Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, will start this Tuesday a visit to Sweden at the invitation of Swedish peer, Anna Lindh.

The Moroccan official, who is attending the funeral of President Hafez Al Assad of Syria, told MAP envoy his visit will be an opportunity to examine means to promote Moroccan-Swedish relations, mainly in economic and trade fields.

Benaissa explained that although Morocco and Sweden maintain good relations, there are some divergences, especially on the Moroccan Sahara issue, in view of Swedish NGOs and parliament stance on this matter.

However, he went on, Morocco projects to continue its endeavors to explain its stand and is convinced that Sweden will eventually join its position.

Benaissa noted that some signs of change were evident during the visit to Stockholm of Swedish representatives who showed understanding to the Moroccan attitude, MAP reported.
