Morocco in World Petroleum Congress
Morocco, Economics, 6/12/2000

Morocco is taking part in the 16th session of the World Petroleum Congress, currently held in the Canadian town of Calgary with 2,500 delegates from 80 countries attending.

Morocco is represented in the congress, to wind up June 15, by energy and mining minister, Youssef Tahiri.

Participants are focussing on the fluctuations in the petroleum market as well as environment and lasting development issues.

Morocco held last Friday in Calgary a day to promote Morocco's oil drilling potentials. The meeting was attended by some fifty leaders of Canadian and international oil firms, attesting to the growing importance of oil drilling in the country.

Youssef Tahiri announced during the meeting that Morocco will launch next October the first tender for oil drilling in an offshore zone between Rabat and Safi.

The meeting urged participants to visit Morocco to better know the country's oil potential. He also briefed participants on the various reforms Morocco is introducing in the oil sector to encourage foreign investment.

The official, who noted that oil and gas were discovered and produced in several regions of Morocco "in relatively limited quantities," said Morocco's potentials remain largely under-exploited, as only 250 drilling operations were operated in the existing 580,000 square km of sedimentary basins.

Besides these basins, Morocco has important offshore areas (300,000 square), where limited drilling operations (26) took place.
