Bashar al-Assad receives Lebanese leaders

Bashar al-Assad on Sunday afternoon received the Lebanese President Emile Lahoud, the Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss, and the speaker of parliament Nabih Berri,. The Lebanese leaders expressed condolences to al-Assad from Lebanon's people and government on the demise of the late president and their commiseration to Syria and the family of the deceased.

They stressed to Bashar al-Assad that Lebanon will never forget President Hafez al-Assad's stand in backing Lebanon and his continued work for Lebanon's peace and the unity of its lands and people.

The three Lebanese leaders said that history will always remember the name of President Hafez al-Assad as one of the major historical Arab leaders.

The meeting was attended by the chairman of the security and reconnaissance department at the Syrian forces working in Lebanon Lt. Gen. Ghazi Kanaan.

Bashar al-Assad also received former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al- Hariri and the two members of the Lebanese parliament Bahya al-Hariri and Basem al-Sabaa., who offered their condolences on the demise of President Hafez al-Assad.

In this regard, Bashar al-Assad received telephone calls conveying condolences on the death of the President from King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, and from the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.
