Israel and the new conditions in Syria
Syria-Israel, Politics, 6/12/2000

The Israeli radio said on Sunday morning that Israeli well-informed sources at the divan of the Israeli prime minister expressed their hope on Saturday evening that conditions in Syria will be settled quickly so as it will be possible to resume negotiations between Syria and Israel very soon.

The sources stressed that Israel's hand is still extended to peace, hoping that Bashar al-Assad will shake hand with this extended hand.

The sources in the divan of the Israeli premier made it clear that despite recent developments in the region, negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian government will continue without any delay.

A high ranking source at the Israeli army said that no special moves have been registered for the Syrian army and there are no anti-Israeli activities.

The source continued that the Syrian army seems calm, adding that the Israeli army can continue ordinary activities, but with an alert intelligence.

The Israeli military source expressed its conviction that if matters proceed this way after the funeral of President al-Assad, Authority transfer to Bashar al-Assad will be made without obstacles and that the new president is expected to concentrate his efforts in the first phase on ensuring the stability of his rule.
