Syrian vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam on Sunday received two following legislative decrees no. 9 and 10 for the year 2000, which provide for raising the military grade of col. Bashar Hafez al-Assad to a Lt. Gen. as well as to appoint him as a commander general for the army and armed forces.

Syrian vice- President Abdul Halim Khaddam on Sunday released law no 9 for the year 2000, approved by the Syrian parliament ( People's assembly) on June 10. It provided for amending article no 83 of the Syrian constitution which stipulates that one who nominates himself for the Syrian presidency to be a Syrian national, enjoying civil and political rights and have a minimum age of 34 years old.
