Reactions to President al-Assad's death
Syria, Politics, 6/11/2000

Politicians and analysts and politicians hold unanimous views on that the death of President Hafez al-Assad opens the door before several possibilities, foremost being that the late President's son Bashar, his possible successor, has to strengthen his authority in the country.

To this effect an Egyptian political analyst said it has become evident that the question of peace has become suspended because Bashar has at first to work for ensuring the stability of the country and everything else comes second.

However, the British writer Patrick Seale said that the death of President Hafez al-Assad would not contribute to delaying the peace process. Rather would lead to the contrary in leading the two countries ( Syria and Israel) to find in peace a strategic need pushing them forward to open a new page.
