Economy, trade ministers of G-15 to gather in Cairo
Egypt, Politics, 6/10/2000
The fifth meeting of the Group-15 ministers of economy and trade, chaired by Egypt's Minister of Economy Youssef Boutros Ghali, is to be held in Cairo next Thursday within the framework of the 10th G-15 summit which will be hosted by Egypt on June 1920.
Ministers of economy and trade, the World Trade Organization (WTO) Deputy Director and Assistant Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will attend the meeting.
"The agenda of the meeting focuses on enhancing trade exchange and economic cooperation among the G-15 countries," head of the committee assigned for preparing for the meeting Hamdy Metwali said.
He also noted that the agenda would probe the relationship between trade, development and global economy in view of recent changes as represented by the failure of the third WTO ministerial conference, held in Seattle in 1999.
The sixth G-15 forum on investment will be held on the sidelines of the meetings. Ghali will open the fifth meeting of the G-15 chambers of commerce and industry federations, which will also be held on the fringe of the summit.
"The G-15 trade representative offices exerted great efforts, during the past period, in inviting businessmen of the group to participate in the meetings on investment, trade and technology committee, led by Egypt," Metwali said.
"These offices also invited them to take part in the roundtable meetings of businessmen, organized by the Egyptian Industries Federation, to probe means of boosting cooperation among businessmen in the field of small-and medium-scale projects and developing tourism and information technology (IT)," he noted.
A number of G-15 countries will take part in the commercial exhibition, due to be held from June 13 to 21.
Egypt's exports to G-15 up by 28 per cent
A study drawn up by the International Trade Point showed that the Egyptian exports to the G-15 rose last year to $207.94 million with a rate of 28.8 per cent.
Egypt's trade balance with this group was suffering from a deficit from 1994 to 1999 worth $485.9 million then it went up to $778.2 million as a result of a decline in the volume of these exports.
