Damascus denies statements claimed to be stated by al-Shara
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 6/10/2000
A Syrian media source on Friday denounced a misrepresentation of statements made by the Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara on the presence of the Syrian forces in Lebanon.
The Syrian sources added " this is a great damage to Lebanon and to people's coexistence as well as the historical relations between Syria and Lebanon."
This statements were in remarks to the editorial written on Friday by the director general of the Lebanese daily al-Nahar Jubran Tweini in which he (Tweini) quoted al-Shara as saying that "the pullout of the Syrian forces from Lebanon will lead to the eruption of sectarian fighting, once again." Tweini also called for the withdrawal of the Syrian forces (35,000 troopers) which are deployed in Lebanon in order to preserve peace, after Israel had withdrawn from South Lebanon.
The Syrian sources said that certain media sides which are "launching campaigns against Syria at this very time do not aim at enabling Lebanon to celebrate the victory of liberating the south, a victory realized through solidarity with Syria and resulted in the defeat of the occupied Israeli forces in South Lebanon, adding that this also serve enemy objectives."
The Syrian source continued " those had also quoted the foreign minister al-Shara saying things he did not say and built stances based on these statements. Stances the least to be described as very damaging to the Lebanese people and to the eternal and historical relations linking Syria to Lebanon."
The Syrian source stressed the need "of objectivity and preciseness on any statement made by any official."
It added "What they are doing ( in remarks to Tweini editorial) just contributes to alleviating the Israeli defeat in South Lebanon and at harming Syria and Lebanon, especially at a time when Israel has not yet completed its withdrawal from Lebanon."
