Torabi starts a new party in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 6/9/2000

Hassan al Torabi - the frozen secretary general of the National Conference which is the ruling party in Sudan - started the process to form a new political party.

Informed political sources in the governmental department responsible for political parties affairs said that "the register of the political organizations and parties will issue a decision to reject the appeal presented by Torabi's assistants regarding the legality of the decisions that were lately issued by (president) Bashir which called for freezing the activities of the party's general trusteeship headed by al-Bashir and the trusteeships of the central party and its trusteeships in the regions." Torabi had disputed the presidential decision which in effect froze Torabi's power in the political party to which he and the president were members of.

In reaction, it is repeated in Khartoum that the most prominent names that Torabi suggests for the anticipated new party that he will form is "the National Charter Front."

It is believed that Torabi's new party will begin as a violent opposition to the government concerning the current tension it is experiencing with the ruling party.
