Mubarak hopes Syrian-Israeli talks begin
Egypt-United Arab Emirates, Politics, 6/8/2000

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak Thursday hoped the Syrian-Israeli talks begin. President Mubarak, who arrived in Geneva on Wednesday to inquire after UAE President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahiyan's health, said that Palestinian-Israeli talks will open in Washington next week. He hoped for a progress to bring stability to the region .

Before leaving Geneva , Mubarak said his relationship with the UAE President is old since President Sadat's rule, an Egyptian statement said.

President Mubarak said that he inquired after the health of Sheikh Zayed.

President Mubarak revealed that their discussions covered the Middle East issue, the situation in Lebanon after the Israeli withdrawal , Israeli-Syrian relations, and the convocation of a Pan-Arab Summit.

"Sheikh Zayed is known for his wisdom and far-sightedness," the president commented.

President Mubarak said that the Egyptian and UAE viewpoints are semi-identical, the Egyptian statement added.

Asked about whether the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon will ease or block pullout from the strategic Syrian Golan Heights, President Mubarak said Syria welcomed the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon. "The issue of withdrawal from the strategic Syrian Golan Heights requires negotiations and should be concluded within the framework of a peace agreement," President Mubarak added.

On the internal political situation in Israel at present, the president voiced hope that the peace process will move on for maintaining the stability of the region.
