Morocco, Spain agree direct fishing has to stop
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 6/8/2000

Moroccan and Spanish foreign ministers, Mohamed Benaissa and Josep Pique, said in Rabat Wednesday that both countries agree that cooperation between Morocco and the European Union can no longer be part of the past agreements that provided for direct fishing in Moroccan waters.

the Spanish official-- who paid an official visit to Morocco Tuesday and Wednesday-- said at a press conference, Spain agrees that past Morocco-EU agreements can no longer be the basis of cooperation and that Morocco, being a sovereign country, has all the rights over its own resources. Pique insisted that the two countries have to reach a solution that satisfies both sides.

For the head of the Moroccan diplomacy, while no agreement was reached during the visit of EU commissioner for fisheries to Morocco, the kingdom is ready for all forms of cooperation with the EU.

Touching on talks held in Rabat with the Spanish foreign minister, Benaissa said they covered bilateral, regional and international issues.

Regarding the re-admission of undocumented African immigrants to their home-country, Benaissa said the difficulty in carrying out the re-admission lies in the fact that not all illegal African immigrants used Morocco to reach Europe.

Benaissa further announced that part of the regular contacts that they called "casual," he will go to Spain next July to carry on discussions.
