Khaddam, Hariri seen off al-Shehabi when he left for the US

Well-informed sources in Damascus told the London-based al-Hayat daily that Syrian vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam and former Lebanese premier Rafik al-Hariri had seen off the retired Syrian army chief of staff Lt. Gen. Hekmat al-Shehabi upon leaving Beirut for the USA on Tuesday.

Meantime, Syrian sources told al-Hayat that the chairman of the Socialist Progressive Party in Lebanon Walid Junblat has criticized the corruption- fighting campaign which targeted al-Shehabi because he ( Junblat) " fears it will be extended to Lebanon." The Syrian sources added in replying to Junblat statement " corruption is the same every where."

Al-Hayat added that a meeting was held on Wednesday between the ministers of Finance Khaled al-Maheyni and the minister of the economy Muhammad al-Imadi and the chairman of the " central commission for audition and inspection Ahmad Yunis and other officials by the end of which they took a " legal measure against one person who is accused of corruption."

Al-Shehabi went to Lebanon after information revealed that he has links " to corruption cases during investigations with several former officials."

The sources explained that al-Shehabi made medical checks at the American University in Beirut and he stayed in one " palace," known by the former Lebanese Premier al-Hariri. The sources added that Khaddam visited al-Shehabi during his illness and seen him off at Beirut's airport.
