Arafat asked to establish a civil government worthy of the Palestinians
Palestine, Politics, 6/7/2000

Palestinian parties and organizations topped by Fath movement asked the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat to issue his instructions to the different security fronts to stop detaining and harassing Palestinians and to release all detainees and stopping procedures taken against civic organizations.

They expressed anxiety toward procedures against public organizations and issues of liberties and democracy - criticizing the detention campaign that took lately.

The security bodies were accused of using procedures and methods "that are not familiar for our people's tradition." The Palestinian government is seen by some as treating Palestinians - in the areas it controls - with the same procedures and giving them the same liberties as those they had under Israeli occupation.
