Palestinian leader asks morocco to host palestinian national dialogue conference
Morocco-Palestine, Politics, 6/7/2000
Secretary general of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (FDLP), Naief Hawatmeh, who is visiting Morocco, has proposed that Morocco hosts a Palestinian national dialogue conference to "restore Palestinian Unity."
The FDLP leader said he feared that in the absence of unity among the Palestinian people, the Palestinian cause will only witness more regressions and concessions.
Hawatmeh who was interviewed by Moroccan TV channel "2M" insisted on national unity and restructuring the Palestine Liberation Organization with the participation of all Palestinian trends and on the basis of a political program approved by all. He added that after these conditions are met, the Palestinian will be able to present to all Arab countries a unified work program and contribute, efficiently, to restoring Arab solidarity and hold an Arab summit.
Hawatmeh who rejects the Oslo agreements argued that negotiations between Israel and Palestine were an ill-omen because they were outside the UN resolutions and decisions related to the return of refugees, to the status of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the decisions made by the Palestinian national council some days before the Madrid conference.
He also denounced secret negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis as well as Israeli Premier Ehud Barak's announcement that Jerusalem will not return to the ante-1967 borders and that the city will remain Israel's unified capital.
He stressed that it is this situation that led to the present deadlock in the Palestinian issue as Israel has a plan that opposes the UN resolutions related to the Palestinian people's rights and to the political settlement process.
