Al-Shara: Israel has the strongest military arsenal in the region
Syria, Politics, 6/7/2000

Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara has asserted that what has taken place in South Lebanon constitutes a great event. He added " No body should forget that Israel has the biggest military arsenal in the region and it will not admit its defeat, easily."

In press statements he made in Cairo on Tuesday, al-Shara said that Syria and Lebanon have a unified position towards a just and comprehensive peace, noting " no party will sign a peace agreement with Israel without the other."

As he indicated the failure of the Israeli attempts to create problem after its pullout, al-Shara said "the scenario which was drawn by Israel to withdraw from Lebanon has failed."

On the linkage met by certain sides between Israel's withdrawal from South Lebanon and the Syrian presence in Lebanon, al-Shara, said " linkage between the two issues is not correct. The Syrian presence was according to a request made by the Lebanese government and people and not by another party, while the Israeli presence was occupation of the southern part of Lebanon."

Al-Shara renewed stress that the door of peace is still open and Syria is stretching its hand for peace, rejecting pressures and does not care for the arrogance which is based on military power. He indicated that Israel is defeated from within despite its military arsenal.

He continued "Syria calls for a just and comprehensive peace. If we were unable to restore our rights, we would be able to reject subjugation and capitulation."
