Mubarak receives invitation to visit Britain
Egypt-UK, Politics, 6/6/2000

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak received an invitation to visit Britain through Michael Levy, Member of the British House of Lords and Personal Envoy of British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Levy said Blair is looking forward to seeing Mubarak in Britain.

Levy termed his meeting with the President as "cordial, fruitful and positive" as it dealt with bilateral relations especially in trade and investment areas.

The meeting also addressed a host of regional issues, topped by the Middle East peace march.

"The Syrian-Israeli track is very difficult," Levy said, when asked on the possible resumption of negotiations in this respect.

Levy added that he met with Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad on several occasions in Damascus.

He added that he also met with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and the door is not completely closed.

He voiced hope that negotiations on this track would be resumed in the near future.

On a possible role by Britain and the EU to probe the peace march, Levy said Britain enjoys cordial and historic relations with the Arab world and it could help activate the peace making, he added.

Blair studied those issues with US President Bill Clinton and other leaders in the region.

Through good relations with world leaders, Britain and the EU could play an important role in backing the peace drive without infringing on the US role, Levy added.

Foreign Minister Amr Moussa met late on Monday with Levy.In statements following the meeting, Levy termed as "positive" his talks with Moussa which dwelt on bilateral relations and trade exchange.

Talks also took up regional and international issues of mutual interest and the British role in the development of the Middle East peace process.
