First Lady Mubarak attends opening of UN Conference on women
Egypt, Culture, 6/6/2000
Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak, the Chairwoman of Egypt's National Council of Women, Monday attended the opening session of a special UN Conference.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan voiced his appreciation for the efforts exerted by Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, in her capacity as the Head of the Higher Egyptian Women Council, to upgrade women's status in Egypt and implement 1995 Beijing Recommendations.
"During his meeting with Mrs. Mubarak, Annan tackled the Egyptian report presented to the UN General Secretariat on Egypt's achievements in the women domain," said Egyptian permanent Delegate to the UN Ahmed Aboul-Gheit.
"Mrs. Mubarak on her part reiterated Egypt's keenness on carrying out all relevant agreements and developing the Egyptian legislation in a bid to realize women's social development in Egypt," Aboul-Gheit added.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan told the opening session that there was a need for an immediate action to end violence against women and bridge "economic divide" between women and men.
Following the opening session, Mrs. Mubarak, who is leading the Egyptian Delegation to the forum, conferred with Chief Delegates of France, the US and Japan to review efforts made for women's development.
Mrs. Mubarak also discussed with Annan possible support by the UN for women's causes, particularly in the developing countries.
