Morocco's honorary consuls in central America confirm freeze of relations with Sahrawi republic
Morocco, Politics, 6/6/2000
Morocco's honorary consuls in several Central American countries who are currently on a visit to the kingdom have confirmed their respective countries' decision to freeze relations with the enemies of Morocco's territorial integrity till the outcome of the referendum process, in line with the U.N settlement plan on the Sahara.
The honorary consuls of Morocco in Guatemala, Honduras, Costa-Rica, Nicaragua and El Salvador, renewed the decision at a meeting here Monday with Moroccan Prime Minister, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, a statement by the premier's office said.
The honorary consuls unveiled at the meeting the "pressures and media maneuvers exerted on their countries concerning their stand on the issue of Morocco's territorial integrity," the statement said.
The United Nations is trying to hold a referendum in the Sahara --a Moroccan southern territory that was formerly under Spanish rule and that was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid accords.
The vote, which will give the people of the Sahara a choice between independence or integration with Morocco, has been repeatedly delayed because of the maneuvers of the separatist Polisario, which seeks to shrink the voter's list.
The visiting honorary consuls also held a meeting with Minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, who surveyed the policy initiated by King Mohammed VI in the political, economic and social sectors.
He underlined Morocco's resolve to go ahead with the promotion of a multifaceted cooperation with central American countries and underlined the key role honorary consuls can play in fostering rapprochement on the basis of shared values and a Hispanic-Arab cultural heritage.
