Princess Lalla Hasna releases open letter on world environment day
Morocco, Environment, 6/6/2000

Princess Lalla Hasna, chairwoman of the national environment preservation campaign, has released an open letter inviting all citizens to preserve environment, underlining that the issue is not the sole responsibility of states and governments but involves all members of the civil society.

The letter that was published by the Moroccan press on Monday stresses the importance to foster the people's awareness and promote education to ecological issues so that they keep all spaces where they live clean, including schools, parks, forests and beaches.

The princess calls all citizens to get actively involved in the nationwide environment protection campaign launched by King Mohammed VI.

A release of the department of environment protection says Morocco looses annually the equivalent of 8.2% of its Gross Domestic Product (or $ 2 billion) as a result of environment degradation.

Environment in Morocco is affected by strong urbanization, soil erosion, the annual disappearance of 31,000 hectares of vegetation and excessive extraction of sand on coasts. The department also announced that laws are being prepared to impose to polluting industries the respect of environment.

Morocco also counts 1,370,000 cars, 80% of which aged more than 10 years.
