Amazing excavations under Abu Quir
Egypt, Culture, 6/5/2000

British Oil Company Mary Depy offered Sunday to take part in current excavation efforts under the water of Abu Quir coastal port following latest discoveries of whole cities under the water of Abu Quir.

The British company which works in Suez Gulf offered contributing to the excavation by providing its hi-tech equipment to help retrieve sunken movements under Abu Quir water.

On his part, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Antiquities (SCA), Dr. Gaballah Ali Gaballah welcomed the British company's initiative and said retrieving sunken monuments and treasures could take 50 years of hard work.

He concluded that an agreement was concluded with French side to set a timetable for the retrieving.

Meanwhile, Paul Averill, a first secretary at the US embassy in Cairo, spotted an ancient wall by accident while driving from Maadi to Ein Sukhna.

Twenty kilometers from the Cairo suburb of Maadi in the direction of Ein Shukhna, the diplomat spotted a wall in a desert area on the side of the road.

He photographed the wall drawings and engravings on it and sent the pictures in a letter addressed personally to Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni.

Dr. Mohamed El-Saghir, Chairman of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector at the ministry, studied the pictures and came up with the conclusion that they are of an ancient building dating back to the modern Stone Age. They depict a person during a hunting trip.

The drawings record the beginning of using images in writing in ancient Egypt.

A team of archaeologists has been set up and were asked to visit the site this week, make excavations and submit their report.

The American diplomat, who is known for his enthusiasm for ancient relics, will accompany members of the committee.
